Google Suggest(s) a New Reputation Management Nightmare

So I was over reading Michael Jensen's blog SoloSEO about how Google was going to roll out Google suggest into the main engine, removing it from the Google Labs. Both Patrick Altoft and he were of the position that this would effectively kill the long tail. As Google will now be forcing users into high-volume, high-money terms (i.e., terms that people are bidding on via Adsense) it's almost like Google is creating a new Top 10 before the user is ever even taken to the SERPs. By having your primary keywords that you are ranking for listed in this drop down, you are far more likely to get traffic than those related terms that aren't being listed. When presented with options, people will generally choose one. That's not to say they will be satisfied with that result and only stay in those SERPs but I am willing to bet it's going to be the first stop for them. I am sure we could talk endlessly about how relevant these phrases are that Google is going to be offering searchers. Will users be forced to immediately perform another search to get the results that they actually want? Perhaps. But that's not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about how Google Suggest is going to lead to an Online Reputation Management nightmare for many.

Martin Bowling Google Suggest Results

As you see by the illustration above, for my name Google only suggests three items--one of them being the infamous zima meme that my wonderful friend Andy Beal started. So with my particular name it doesn't really matter. Instead, let's take a look at Barack Obama.

obama Google Suggest Results

As you can see, there are two glaring negative results. One is the "obama antichrist" listing and the other is "obama muslim." Both of these results, however, are not among the top 10 results for the keyword "obama" because of savvy--and quite effective--online reputation management.

Google SERPs for Obama

Indeed, Barack has done a very effective job on properly managing his online reputation. His efforts with Fight the Smears has been a transparent and up-front way to deal with untruths about himself and his campaign. However, now that Google Suggest is presenting users with these options, some users will be inclined to begin looking around in these SERPs. Even though Barack has done a wonderful job managing his online reputation, negative or false stories are now immediately brought to the front of the results for his name. So how do you manage this now? Over the next few weeks, I will start to take a look at what might be powering Google Suggest and how that can impact you and your online reputation management issues.

Just one last parting gift a look at suggested results for John Edwards. Again, we see a reputation management nightmare.

john edwards google suggest results

P.S. I can't believe I actually said Zima on my blog, I am so afraid of what I am going to start ranking for now :)

Update #1:

MikeTek, down in the comments & over on twitter, had pointed out another great reputation nightmare that has occurred because of Google Suggest. It's none other than SEOChampion, and a search for his name michael rotkin displays michael rotkin is a turd. This shouldn't surprise anyone as SEOChampion pissed off lots and lots of people, over at SES San Jose read up over at Dave Snyder's SnydeySense.

Martin - that's classic that it suggests Zima for you...

On a more serious note that is a very interesting problem... How do you even remedy that?

/sigh, well.. A couple things would spawn from this.. 1. All of us will sign a lot more business trying to deal with new issues that Google creates, and 2. search would again, see a facelift..

Hopefully Google will add some sort of tool for us to work with where we can have some sort of negative keywording, like they offer in adwords... Although this would take some time to implement, especially if it was something that had to be done on the page...

Nice post, Martin.

I found a Google Suggest result that I think would really serve to emphasis the reputation management nightmare you've outline here. Here's a screenshot: http://snurl.com/3k91h .

Cool observation... i might be using this to get more money from some clients that we do ORM for..

however... let's postulate some possible outcomes form this...

1. people get annoyed with google suggesting results that are not specifially relevant to them and changes search engine.
2. at some point the criteria of "# of results" might be changed due to bounce rate on the term...
2b. pron spammers can totally have a field day with this.. whoa... maybe not.. try some pron terms like playboy... britney spears, etc.. the word erotic is filtered...

3. i do ORM for one of the forbes 400 and he gets lots of negative left wing press.. but google suggest has none of those terms listed.. hrmm...

An interesting note....I just tried the "obama" search and "obama muslim" does not appear in the suggestions. Did the suggestions shift due to global search trends, or do the suggestions reflect MY past search behaviors?

Thoughts?

Scott Hepburn

August 27. 2008 07:02

@Scott Hepburn I have also tried the Obama search today and I don't receive the "Obama Muslim" result either so that would lead me to believe that the global trend has changed. hopefully a few days of diving into google insight and trends maybe we can figure out exactly how personal search and global search trends will impact what results google suggest, suggests.

Re the rep management issue (and the Zima one) you may be spot on. I wonder about the death of the long tail issue though. If I think about my own behavior with suggest, which has been in the Google toolbar on FF for a while, I don't think it has influenced me much in terms of detouring my search. I think the majority use case for me is to use it as a way to avoid typing the whole query if I see a match.

Better late then never, Google suggest is finally out after spending years in Google's Lab. The suggest feature is sure going to reduce searches on long tail keywords associated with the search query being entered into the search box. People are more likely to select on the options that suggest throws at them rather than typing the whole thing. Will is prove to be a death nail for long tail keyword search, well we will have to wait and watch.

I also tried the Obama search and the ...muslim was no longer there.

Long tail may go away, but then again if you are looking for something highly specific, the suggest tool probably isn't going to help much.

It certainly gives us ideas on the Medium-tail.

I do wonder what the casual user will think when only two suggestions are given. Will they try one of them or think, hmm, mine isn't hear, maybe I need to try another SE.

NO doubt this will have an effect on searches but users are becoming more and more savvy, since users are understanding that Google is not perfect and rely on the longtail to get better results. No doubt it will be a detrimental affect but I agree with other commentators that building a list is a more viable approach or better still explore more social media mediums for traffic.

Hi Martin,

As someone has touched on, I think the initial suggestions are based on perceived Personalizationon Google's part. For instance, doing a search on my name while logged in to my Google account brought up different results to when I signed out. Nevertheless, this is potentially a bit of a headache, and we would certainly look forward to any follow up posts you have on the matter Smile

I agree with you completely. Google Suggest is dangerous. It will destroy them. Trust me. I used to advertise with Yahoo who uses a similar feature, and the amount of traffic I got from Yahoo was a small percentage of what I got from Google. And it's everything to do with them finishing off a users query with a suggestion rather than allowing his atural senses control the keywords he/she type in.

Introduced in 1961, the Alpinist <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica rolex</a> line has been Seiko's product for upscale outdoorsmen. Designed for the <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Rolex Replica Watches</a> or 'mountain man,' these are watches for those who hike and climb mountains. Over the years, Seiko has introduced <a href="http://www.replicajournal.net/">Replica Rolex</a> both mechanical and quartz versions, many with compass bezels and usually waterproof to an unusual 200m (660ft). Via, news now that they've been redesigned (as per the PR still on the right), with three new <a href="www.fancyfakes.com/.../">rolex submariner replica</a> models set to drop in late July for the Japanes domestic market. The case shape has changed considerably, and the crown is now at the 4 o'clock position, and from these pictures it appears that they're using a variant of the classic SKX-series divers' watch case.
We don't usually review low-end Chinese <a href="limitedwatch.com/Breitling.htm/">breitling replica</a> on WatchReport, but after much discussion and forum topics, we've decided to re-post this <a href="http://www.replicaprofile.net/">fake rolex</a> one.

Today's review is something a little different from our usual <a href="http://www.italianfakes.net/">replica watches</a> fare: Presenting a classically-styled mechanical dress watch with an unusual complication, the jump hour 549-SG2709 from Alpha Watches.
'Jump hour' requires a bit of <a href="http://www.tntswiss.us/">rolex replica</a> explanation. If you look at 12 o'clock on the dial, you see a round window with the number '3' displayed. This is the hours, which are on a disc that changes at the top of the hour. Minutes are read from the long <a href="http://www.italianreplica.net/">replica watches</a> center hand, and seconds are at 6 o'clock in a 'subseconds' configuration. The hour change is quite rapid, about 1/2 of one second, which is why it's called a 'jump hour.'
This is more <a href="http://www.legendaryreplicas.com/">Replica rolex watches</a> properly labeled a 'jump-hour regulator,' which denotes the central minute hand. It makes an attractive and unusual <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Replica Rolex</a> watch, though I must admit that the hours are harder to read than a normal 3-hand watch due to the small window and reflective <a href="http://www.avianwatch.com/">Rolex Replica</a> metal surrounding it.

The <a href="http://www.italianreplica.net/">Replica watch</a> has made many transformations through the years. There have been many modifications and technological advancements that have made it possible to wear <a href="http://www.replicaplayer.net/">Replica Rolex Watches</a> on your wrist and tell the time with a push of a button! Unlike the watches made many centuries ago, the watches of today offer cutting edge technology and modern day convenience features. The <a href="http://www.tntswiss.us/">replica rolex Subamariner</a> is steeped in history and has seen us through World Wars and Nuclear Warfare. At the end of time, there’s no doubt that we’ll use a watch to make note of the date/time!
To truly understand the evolution of the <a href="http://www.replicainsider.net/">replica rolex</a>, we must take a journey into the past. The first timekeeping device was actually a pocket watch. Though, back in the day, they were worn around the neck. I guess we know the <a href="http://www.replicaquest.net/">Watches Replica</a> occupation of Flava Flav’s early ancestors!
After the railroad began using the <a href="http://www.AANDEREPLICAS.COM/">Fake Rolex</a> pocket watch, the watch industry grew by leaps and bounds! With the invention of the wristwatch, <a href="http://www.EDELUXEFASHIONS.NET/">Rolex Replica</a> became increasingly popular among professionals and everyday folk. The LED digital watch and the Pilot’s watch have taken the <a href="http://www.EXACTSWISS.NET/">Replica watch</a> designs and functions to a whole new level. To date, there are many watchmakers vying for your business! Your best bet is to hop online and view the many different <a href="http://www.FINALHOURPROPHECY.COM/">Replica Watches</a> styles, models and prices before you purchase another watch.
The <a href="http://www.FINELUXURYTIME2.COM/">Replica Rolex submariner</a> is the oldest form of watch in production. In the beginning, they were completely customized pieces of <a href="http://www.HOLLYWOODREPLICA1.COM/">Fake Watches</a> that were mainly owned by royalty or the rich. Encrusted with jewels and made of the finest quality materials, the early pocket watches were not easily affordable. Eventually <a href="http://www.IDREAMREPLICA.COM/">Fake Rolex Watches</a> made into smaller versions and worn around the neck, the pocket watch was still mostly considered a fashion accessory. That was until the development of the railroad. Using the <a href="http://www.IREPLICASTYLE.COM/">replica rolex watch</a> as a means to schedule train departures and arrivals, the pocket watch became a time telling necessity. Unfortunately, though, the early pocket watch models did not accurately tell time; they “lost” time as the day progressed, making it impossible to synchronize times among a group of people. Following a train collision, it was deemed that the <a href="http://www.MYSWISS-REPLICAS.COM/">Rolex submariner Replica</a> needed to undergo a technological improvement to tell time more accurately.
The revised <a href="http://www.NEWYORKSWIS.COM/">Replica Watches</a> technology made it possible to begin making the pocket watch smaller and smaller, until it eventually began to be worn on the wrist. The wristwatch began to see a dramatic <a href="http://www.OLYMPICREPLICA.COM/">replica rolex</a> burst of production during wartimes. The military saw a use for a watch that could be easily read while performing duties. The chronograph <a href="http://www.PARADISE-REPLICA.COM/">Fake Watch</a> with luminous hands were in high demand! Today, there are a multitude of watch manufacturers that specialize in wristwatch production. There are <a href="http://www.UPTOWNREPLICAS.COM/">Replica Rolex Watches</a> sporting beautiful jewels and watches that are mostly geared toward function. Some are battery operated, while others operate from the power of the sun! There are watches that will fit into any price range, too. Shopping online will allow you to view and compare many <a href="www.REPLICAUNDERGROUND.INFO/">Replica Watches</a> so that you can pick the one that is most perfect for your wants and needs!

The <a href="http://www.REPLCAS50.COM/">Rolex Replica watch</a> being one of the world's most popular luxury watch brand, it is also the most often replicated watch. However, there are various different types of rolex replica watches, please take time to analyze and research all available options before you make a informed decision.
Why should one buy a <a href="http://www.REPLICAS2YOU.COM/">Replica Rolex Watch</a>? One great reason would be that Rolex replica watches are of the highest quality and very inexpensive compared to the original. Buying an original Rolex could set one back a great deal, buying a rolex replica could give one the pleasure and standing of owning a <a href="http://www.SWISSFREEZ.COM/">Replica Rolex Watch</a> and at the same time save money for the second car.
Rolex certainly creates an impression on the people around you. A rolex represents money and prestige. Believe it or not there is a thing called a high quality rolex replica. The Rolex replicas are graded according to quality. There are 5 quality grades of Rolex replica watches sold on the internet - Swiss (Grade 1), Japanese (Grades 2-4) and Chinese (Grade 5).
<a href="http://www.REPLICAREPORT.INFO/">Fake Rolex submariner</a> watch is one of the most demanded models in the Rolex stable, as a result of which the Rolex replica of the rolex submariner model is also in great demand. Going by the logic that a diver needs a good watch as much as he needs air, Rolex <a href="http://www.THEWATCHFATHERS.COM/">Watches Replica</a> designed this model to cater specially to the diver's applications.

reported it as follows: <a href="http://www.replicajournal.net/">Fake Watches</a>"Hanging round her neck by a riband on this swim, Miss Gleitze carried a small gold watch, which was found this evening to have <a href="http://www.limitedwatch.com/">Fake Rolex</a>kept good time throughout." When examined closely, the watch was found to be <a href="http://www.avianwatch.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.avianwatch.com/">Replica Watch</a>in perfect condition, dry inside and ticking away as if nothing <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.blingmall.com/">Fake Rolex</a>had happened. One month later, <a href="http://www.limitedwatch.com/">Replica Watch</a>on 24 November 1927, Wilsdorf launched the Rolex Oyster watch
<a href="http://www.replicaprofile.net/">Rolex Replica</a>in the United<a href="http://www.fancyfakes.com/">Replica Rolex</a> Kingdom as the focal point of a full front page Rolex advert in the Daily Mail, and the Rolex Oyster began its rise to fame.[23]

<a href="http://www.replicajournal.net/">Replica Rolex</a>Rolex in murder case In a famous<a href="http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica rolex</a> murder case the Rolex that <a href="www.fancyfakes.com/">Rolex</a>a victim wore on his wrist eventually led to the arrest of his murderer. When a body was found in the English Channel in 1996 by a fisherman,[24] a Rolex wristwatch was the only identifiable object on the body.[24][25] Since the Rolex movement had a serial number and was engraved with special markings every time it was serviced, British police<a href="http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica rolex</a> traced the service records from Rolex, and Ronald Joseph Platt was identified as the owner of the watch and the victim of<a href="http://www.limitedwatch.com/">replica watches</a> the <a href="http://www.replicaprofile.net/">replica rolex</a>murder. In addition British police were able to determine the date of death by examining the date on the watch calendar and <a href="http://www.italianfakes.net/">replica rolex</a>since <a href="http://www.tntswiss.us/">rolex replica</a>the Rolex movement had a reserve of two to three days of <a href="http://www.italianreplica.net/">replica rolex</a>operation when
<a href="http://www.legendaryreplicas.com/">replica watches</a>inactive and it was fully <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.blingmall.com/">Fake Watches</a>waterproof, they were able to determine the time of death within a small margin of error.[26][24]

Rolex and the Great Escape On 10 <a href="http://www.avianwatch.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.avianwatch.com/">replica rolex</a>March 1943 Corporal Clive <a href="http://www.finalhourprophecy.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.finalhourprophecy.com/">replica rolex</a>James Nutting, one of the organizers of the Great Escape, ordered <a href="http://www.replicainsider.net/">replica WATCHES</a>a stainless steel <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">replica rolex</a>Rolex Oyster 3525 Chronograph valued at a current equivalent <a href="http://www.replicajournal.net/">replica watches</a>of £1200 <a href="http://www.avianwatch.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.avianwatch.com/">replica watches</a>by mail directly <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica rolex</a>from Hans Wilsdorf in Geneva, <a href="http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica rolex</a>intending to pay for it with money he saved working as a shoemaker<a href="http://www.limitedwatch.com/">rolex" rel="nofollow">http://www.limitedwatch.com/">rolex replica</a> at the camp.[27][28][29] The watch, <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.blingmall.com/">Replica Watches</a>(Rolex watch no. 185983),[27][30] <a href="http://www.replicaprofile.net/">Replica Watches</a>was delivered to Stalag Luft III on 4 August along with a note from Wilsdorf <a href="http://www.finalhourprophecy.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.finalhourprophecy.com/">replica watches</a> apologising for any delay in processing the order and explaining that an English gentleman such as Corporal Nutting "should not even think" about paying for the watch before the end of the war.[29][31] Rolex had initially extended this wartime offer to all British officers prisoners of war and Hans Wilsdorf, who believed that a British officer's word was his contract, was in charge of the program.[28][32] As an example, an estimated 3,000 Rolex watches were ordered by British officers in the Oflag (prison camp for officers) VII B POW camp in Bavaria.[31] This offer had the effect of raising the morale among the allied prisoners of war because it indicated that Wilsdorf did not believe that the Nazis would win the war.[29][28] Wilsdorf is reported to have <a href="http://www.avianwatch.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.avianwatch.com/">Replica Watches</a>been impressed <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.blingmall.com/">Replica Rolex</a>with Nutting, because although not an officer, he had ordered the expensive Rolex 3525 Oyster chronograph while most other prisoners ordered the much cheaper Speed King model which was popular due to its small size.[31] The watch is believed to have been ordered specifically to be used in the Great Escape, where as a chronograph it could have been used to time patrols of prison guards or time the 76 escapers through tunnel "Harry" on 24 March, 1944.[28][29] Eventually, after the war, Nutting was sent an invoice of only £15 for the watch, due to currency export controls in England at the time.[29] The watch and associated correspondence between Wilsdorf and Nutting were sold at auction for £66,000 in May 2007 while at an earlier auction on September 2006 the same watch fetched 54,000 <a href="http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.fancyfakes.com/">replica rolex watches</a>AUSD.[30][29] Nutting served as <a href="http://www.limitedwatch.com/">rolex" rel="nofollow">http://www.limitedwatch.com/">rolex replica watches</a>a consultant for both the 1950 film The Wooden Horse and the 1963
ilm The Great Escape.[31] Both films were based on actual escapes which took place at Stalag Luft III.
It began <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica rolex</a> with a simple boycott of <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake Watches</a>Jewish shops and ended in the gas chambers at Auschwitz as Adolf Hitler and his Nazi followers attempted to exterminate the entire Jewish population of Europe.

In January 1933, after<a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake Watch</a> a bitter ten-year political struggle, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. During his rise to power, Hitler had repeatedly<a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica Watch</a> blamed the Jews for Germany's defeat in World War I and subsequent economic hardships. Hitler also put forward racial theories asserting that Germans with fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes were the supreme form of human, or master <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Fake Rolex</a>race. The Jews, according to Hitler, were the racial opposite, and were actively engaged <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica Watch</a>in an international conspiracy to keep this master race from assuming its rightful position as rulers of the world.
Jews at this time composed only about one percent of Germany's population of 55 million persons. German Jews were <a href="http://www.blingmall.com/">Rolex Replica Watches</a> mostly cosmopolitan in nature and proudly considered <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Rolex Replica</a> themselves to be Germans by nationality and Jews only by religion. They had lived in Germany for centuries, fought bravely for the Fatherland in its wars and prospered in numerous professions.
But they were <a href="http://www.THEWATCHFATHERS.COM/">Watches Replica</a> gradually shut out of German <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">Replica Rolex</a>society by the Nazis through a never-ending series of laws and decrees, culminating in the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, which <a href="http://www.REPLICAREPORT.INFO/">Fake Rolex submariner</a> deprived them of their German citizenship and forbade intermarriage with non-Jews. They were removed <a href="http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica" rel="nofollow">http://www.globalreplica.com/">replica Watches</a>from schools, banned from the professions, excluded from military service, and were even forbidden to share a park bench with a <a href="http://www.REPLICAS2YOU.COM/">Replica Rolex Watch</a> non-Jew.
